Not a Fandom Secret, but it should be one, because it's as lame as a lot of those are. Also? The fact that I've seen three Old Kingdom (Sabriel and Lirael) related secrets in three weeks makes me oddly happy. Really, though, I read it for the SPN.

edit: Hm. It occurs to me that the graphic is wrong. I only watched half of season 4.

p.s. If she really leaves, I'm going to flip a bitch. I know there's at least two of you who really hate her, but I really love her. In all honesty, she's probably my second favorite character (after Wilson). Just thinking about it, I really love her. Second season, especially. /; I think if she left, I'd cry.

TAKING GOOD CARE OF MY BROTHER
Corinne Hales, CSU Fresno

I've exposed the whole underside
Of a fallen sparrow
With a flick of my boot's toe.

Maggots. The belly is raw,
Crawling with disease. The bird
Squawks and one brown wing beats time
Desperately at the dirt.

My little brother cries.
He believes I can heal it
If I want to. I believe
There is no hope.

They say when the time comes a bird
Will push her half-grown to the edge
And over. Who can blame her?
How could she possibly know
Something is so wrong? I can't make myself

Touch it. My brother,
Hands clamped over his ears,
Becomes pure vision,
Shutting out all reason.

And the terrible screeching
That comes from both their mouths
At once demands a miracle
I cannot provide. I scoop
The bird into a tin can
And carry it further
Into the yard where we are burning
Paper trash in a black oil drum.

My brother watching, I toss the thing
Quick toward the flames
And the bird, out of my hands,
Starts to fly.

Without hesitation, it flies straight
As if the miracle has happened,
Into the hot bright heart of the fire.

Random Organizational Post, aka fic I need to link to in this journal, so I'll be able to find it later. Some of it is good, some of it really isn't. I'm actually quite proud of that Madara/Itachi, looking back.

+ "Cradle Stories" is only the first part of a fic I never finished, because I didn't really like Itachi's characterization--I stole one of the scenes and added it to cradles, eddies.

+ "Four Bowls" is a random collection (in no particular order) of scenes I've written for a longer fic. I'm still writing that, and still planning to rewrite these, so any concrit would be awesome.

Essentially everything else was written so long ago I really don't know what it is... >.>

Naruto
19 Jul 09: Thorns (PG; Sannin)
Tsunade sits in her nest of thorns, letting the light dance on the good-luck necklace that has sealed two too many fates, already.

17 Jul 09: Four Bowls (G; Mikoto, Fugaku, Sasuke, Itachi)
At the bottom of the sink, there are two bowls and one pair of chopsticks. A film of evaporated broth coats the bowl a translucent yellow-green, and flecks of hard, dry rice from days long past stick to its sides.

Was it Mother's, from some night when she ate alone, left her chopsticks for Father to use when he returned home? Had he eaten it, some breakfast he poured down without thinking that it would be the last of its kind? (Or perhaps it was Itachi, knowing that it was.)
12 Jun 09: Fevre Dream (PG-13; Madara/Itachi, NCS, violence, mindfuck)
His body arches, and his legs skim down the length of Madara's underbelly, pelvis. Itachi's foot (sandal gone) squirms fishlike against Madara's cock, as Itachi starts to drown drown drown in air.
14 Mar 09: Cradle Stories (G; Itachi, Shisui, horror, WIP)
He emulates Shisui as best he can. And though it rips through his hand first, it flies and flies and it hits its target. Itachi curls his hand into his sleeve and looks at the sky bleeding red with sunset, hopes that is enough for today.

Father is not fooled. Be more careful, he grunts, as he kneels down forces Itachi's palm open. It strings sharply in the open air, and Itachi cringes. Fugaku gives him a look that says, I am sorry. I forget that you are only a child, and that children can be hurt by a good many things.
Six Feet Under
26 Jun 09: Codependent (G; Federico, Ruth)
There's a sterility to his answers that mirrors the cold, fluorescent room, like some piece of them is left outside this door, wanders her house as it waits, collects in her corners and cupboards until the day is done and the dead are buried.

I found a fabulous list of links to old fan fiction that I'd never posted to my journal for whatever reason (laziness, embarrassment), which was neat. So I took the liberty of adding to it all the meme!fic I've done recently. If the title isn't capitalized, then it's not really the title of the piece; it's just a designation I'm using to differentiate between fics ('hobo story with no plot,' for instance, would have been a fairly poor title, by my estimations!).

Meme!fic

[info]silent_unions Pein/Konan meme (Naruto)
drabble meme 1.0 (PG-13; Pein/Konan, Madara)

2009 Kink meme (Naruto)
Girl in Spring (R for creepiness; Kakuzu/random woman -- hot spring sex)
these floorboards (R for wtf?; Sasuke/Itachi -- dubcon, possessiveness)
immortal things (PG-13; Konan/Pein -- sex on the battlefield)
Space for Rent (PG-13; Itachi/Sasuke that Sasuke is convinced is Sasuke/Itachi, implied Sakura/Sasuke -- possessiveness, AU)
Observe and Repeat (PG-13; Sai/Sakura, (fantasies of) past!Saku/Sasu -- bodypainting, sex dreams)

Alphabet meme (Multi-fandom)
rukongai 56 (PG; Itachi, Deidara, Byakuya -- Bleach/Naruto xover)
heartless (G; Ulquiorra/Orihime -- Bleach)
hobo story with no plot (PG; Itachi, Shisui -- Naruto)
OMNOMNOM (R for omgwtf; Zetsu, Madara, mentions of Itachi and Sasuke -- Naruto)
My Painted Lady (G; Cain, Merriweather -- Godchild)
step not into temptation (PG; Roy, Lust -- Fullmetal Alchemist)

Fullmetal Alchemist: 2006-2009

A Madman’s Hypothesis Regarding Perfection (R; Tucker/wife)
With an Ocean’s Might (PG; water!Sloth, ...beaches??)
If Freckles Told Secrets (G; Ed/Win/Al childhood!gen)
Predilection (R; Roy/Hughes, Roy/Fuhrer)
Entropy (PG-13; Roy/Ed)
The Morning After (PG-13; Roy/Ed)
A Different Cut (PG, humor; Mustang et al)
Ramblings of Half a Man (PG-13; Tucker, Edward)
A Beanstalk (G; Fletcher, Alphonse)

And I actually wrote an Al/Elicia drabble for [info]dreamer1789 a while back, which I can't find. XD But in the event that I ever do, this note exists to remind me to put it here.

Most of these, I would not have remembered writing if I hadn't found them, going through community archives. O_o;; I...kind of wish that I hadn't remembered ever writing any of these.

This is mainly for my own reference, so it'll be easier to find things in the future. (Or so I hope.) Doubles as official 'unveiling' of that kink meme stuff, since I don't think I ever did that. Sometime in the hopefully near future, I plan to work on some more of those, and finish the Alphabet Meme.

In other news? I wasn't invited to my own birthday dinner, and my sister blocked me on AIM. I'm really feeling the love, guys!

A Little Science
Fullmetal Alchemist drabble

"A little science estranges a man from God, a lot of science brings him back."
Sir Francis Bacon

He wakes at dawn to cook Al’s favorite breakfast. It sticks to the pan in funny ways, and he’s afraid Al will smell the charred blackness that’s crusted on the sides. Mother’s omelets never looked so icky.

(There must be something wrong with the chicken that laid the eggs.)

Nothing can go wrong today; Edward vows Alphonse won’t notice when it does. Because Al’s birthday is most important.

He admits Al would have to be exceptionally blind not to notice this disaster, but it can’t be helped. He scoops ‘breakfast’ into a cup—the plates are dirty—and presents it to Alphonse (who is coming down the stairwell; he yawns, says it smells like something’s burning).

Alphonse blinks once, twice—then grins, lets the omelet crumble into the trashcan like ash. Let’s try again, he says. We’ll get it right this time.

Al’s birthday is most important, not because he’s loved best or because he’s the youngest. His birthday is the soft peace in the wake of (winter, gone already? has it been that long?) spring’s storms.

This year, it’s even more special, because they’ve planned a major victory; Edward counts the hours before it arrives.

Today, nothing can go wrong.

First omelets, Edward promises. Then, Mother.

For someone who knows that some memories are never meant to be forgotten, and bonds last no matter time or distance. For someone who is one of the most important people in the world to me, whether she believes it or not and whether I, daily, show it enough (I never do). I love you.

"She ran up to me and put her arms around me in an embrace. 'I'm back!' she whispered, softly, lovingly, as much an admission to herself as it was to me about how much she had been missed."

Thank-Yous and Sorrow

Written 14 January 2009. Brainstorming for Sasuke!fic. Never mind that this is an Al POV FMA ficbit.

Maybe this will be the day she gets up and swings him around, cocks her hip and twirls him about the kitchen while she dances, and her skirt skates across his bare, baby legs. )

Swing scene inspired by the following: “A jealous boy of two or three was making a nuisance of himself by trying to push or pull the swing board; he finally succeeded in getting himself knocked down by it, and bawled loudly as he lay supine on the grass while his mother continued to smile gently at neither of her present children.”

Because everyone and their shoe is born in October (ah, but this is one of the reasons I love October. :3 Nearly every day is a special one).

Alphonse is a very special character to me, and I think it's fairly obvious from the fic I've written that a lovelovelove him. So, because he lacks one canonically I selected a birthday for him, the date of which originates from The Scarlet Ibis, by James Hurst. [PDF download]

I know, I know, I link this story every year on this day. But in addition to my Alphonse Birthday story, and my Elric!kyoudai story, my my-god-I-love-American-lit story, and my allegories-are-awesome story, and any-number-of-other-things story, it also happens to be my favorite short story.

"It was the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree. The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia petals, and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox. The five o'clocks by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, softly speaking the names of our dead."

The Scarlet Ibis, James Hurst.

And while we're at it, how about some Elric!kyoudai-esque poetry? These happen to be some of my favorite poems, as well. Why yes, I do in fact recommend these quite frequently as well! "Power" and "Taking Good Care of My Brother" by Corrinne Hales, whom you've never heard of before. At least, I am fairly certain you have not; in any case, she (he?) is (was?) a professor at CSU Fresno. As you can tell from my description, she (he?) is steeped in mystery. XD

Idolatry

My little brother cries. He believes I can heal it
If I want to. I believe
There is no hope.

Corrine Hales, “Taking Good Care of My Brother”

This was the story Mother thought was so adorable:

It was not until Alphonse reached the second form that he realized ‘Brother’ was not spelt E-D-W-A-R-D. And his teacher was genuinely concerned, defensive, flabbergasted—because a student of hers ‘didn’t know his letters’. And Mother laughed and laughed, and finally the teacher laughed, too.

And Alphonse cannot believe the teacher is laughing now, telling this story to everyone on top of the green, green hill—the only place in entire world that wasn’t a burnt autumn-brown by now and the only place in the entire world Mother’s ever going to see again.

Not like these people, dressed all in black as one by one they drip back into their own lives and their dinners and their spelling tests.

Not like Dad.

“No matter what we said, he didn’t come back,” Alphonse said, throat tight and tears imminent. “We wrote so many letters, and he didn’t come back.”

He expected Brother to begin one of his angry tirades, because that was the sort of thing Brother did when he didn’t want to face the truth.

Everything would be okay after that, for Brother could move the world with his anger. If he was angry it meant that something was wrong and he wasn’t going to stop until the world was good again.

Brother’s only response was, “And neither did she.”

Something inside of Alphonse paled. His eyes traced the path of one more falling leaf. “You can’t blame Mom; she was s-sick and–” And she still had us; we should have been enough. She should have eaten better, slept easier, prayed longer, fought harder…

Lived longer.

Brother shook his head, crushed the leaf to a fine dust atop Mother’s tombstone.

Alphonse clamped his eyes shut and pretended not to see.

Paradise Lost
Fullmetal Alchemist Fan Fiction

Genre: gen, mystery, family
Characters: Ed, Al, Hohenheim
Rating: PG-13 (T) for brief language, general mindfuck towards the end
Word Count: 5500 or so
Summary: With Hohenheim suddenly resurfaced, Edward restive, and Dante's house quite possibly more of an enigma than the Lady Dante herself, Alphonse finds himself in a situation that's much more than he bargained for.
Notes: Post-Greed!arc (anime-verse) alternate timeline, which basically means that instead of doing whatever it was they actually did, the Elrics instead elect to stay in Dublith and search through Dante’s alchemic journals. Written for [info]dreamer1789 for the March-April round of [info]fma_exchange. The prompt was something to the effect of, “Ed+Al+Hoho, with emphasis on mystery/family genres and psychological introspection.”

This is very late. There are no excuses. I was playing in the wrong fandom for far too long. I can only hope this is not a total disappointment, and is even somewhat worth the wait. :8

'The guy is missing for a decade, and then shows up at this house like it's nothing out of the ordinary? And he acts like he thinks he can pick up where he left off and be 'Dad' now! you CAN'T think that's normal, Al. We've seen stranger things, but there is no way in HELL that's normal.' )

Best. Christmas present. Ever!

Because, see, I collect rubber ducks. And adding Fullmetal Alchemist to that is just the right amount of obsessive geekery. :3 More images (from different views) available at the Elric Rubber Duck gallery!

These were lovingly made for me by [info]ippoditty, whose creativity and artistic ability continually amaze me. These are excellent!

-- On a Fullmetal Alchemist-related note, Auntie Mona and Uncle Humphrey also gave me the English translation of volume 14, which was convenient since I own 13 and 15 in Japanese, but not the connecting volume.

My one observation: did Envy's dialogue ALWAYS suck that much, or is it just in his large, many-eyeballed form?

I’m unsure of how well that worked. I’d like to think it conveyed change, and deterioration, and all of that good stuff, but I could be horribly mistaken. Constructive criticism is applauded!

You know what I've noticed? For the most part, I don't write about characters that I would actively search out fic for. I mean, when it comes to FMA fic premises that I do enjoy, I'd rather have someone write it for me. That way I can sit back and simply read it!

These two drabbles happen to be things I would read (over and over and over again), because I love drabbles and I love Elric!kyoudai, as well as subtle Roy+Winry interaction. I'd still rather read someone else's drabbles, but it was a nice change.

Paintings of circles and symbols and the angry blots he’d used to cover his mistakes adorn the walls, in all their heathen glory. The land lady asks if he mightn’t prefer painting her the good Lord’s son in the manger instead. )

If anyone is looking for a unique premise or a strange new angle on an old one, I strongly suggest you close this window and begin your search anew. This drabble possesses the standard tone and subject material characteristic of, well, Edward-centric post-series drabbles. But angsty Elric!kyoudai drabbles, whether they're all about the same things or not, happen to be one of my favourite types of FMA fic - to read, that is. In any case: This drabble was written to assuage my abhorrence of using Ed as a viewpoint character. (Because I really am truly awful at writing Ed, god knows why. >.>)

Criticism welcomed in any form, because I see many more of these sorts of drabbles in my future. Some of you on ye olde flist may remember my obsession with these last January. (Then again, maybe not. XD)

A Little Religious
Fullmetal Alchemist fan fiction

Rating: G (K)
Genre: gen, humor, almost!crack
Word Count: almost 200
Summary: Al tries to convince a special someone that alchemists are religious.
Notes: Uhhh… yeah. Not sure WTF this is, but it was amusing at the time. Here’s to hoping someone will also find it somewhat funny. Written 12 November 2006.

We alchemists can’t help but be a little religious. I’ll be the first to admit our practices don’t fit into your religion, but we could at least pretend to be Unitarian—I read all about it in textbooks of the ancient world, really I did—if that’s what you want.

We believe in a higher power. It’s just that we are in direct contact with it, and with enough training can learn to manipulate—no, that sounds bad—to channel it. And there are taboos in alchemy, things that we are forbidden to do. That’s like the Commandments, right? Half of them? And we have a ‘clergy’ of alchemists and clerical work… We’re always in search of the truth behind all truths!

If that’s not enough, we pursue our goals religiously, with all the patience of a saint, ah ha ha. …Er.

So you see, Cornello, sir, there’s really no need to shoot us. If you could just put that machine gun down, I’m sure we could—

You really didn’t need to do that, Brother.
