#centennial (highway) rewatch 1x15, 1x16

# I miss low-key pre- and interim-hunt bar scenes like the one that opens 1x15. <3 Though I suppose if they had them now they'd be egregiously sad bar scenes, not low-key bar scenes. Of course, I'd take that too. Apparently I do still wish the bunker would burn down!

# I like 1x15 well enough, but I've never really respected it, because it's just kind of like... Surely I can't be the only one who read The Most Dangerous Game multiple times in school! I recognize that most of the episodes in S1 are based on existing urban legends and ghost stories, but I feel like usually there's a very SPN-specific take to those. Whereas this one is just like, well, it's The Most Dangerous Game except not a rich guy on an island, just hillbillies in Minnesota. Which I suppose has its own SPN color to it ("rustic obsessive"!) but not really. I mean, have you ever READ Texas Monthly before?

tl;dr not only is Soylent Green people, but the people who make Soylent Green are people too, basically.

But as I was saying. As much as I've never really respected 1x15 in a storytelling regard, I still adore that rustic obsessive aesthetic to pieces. The Bender house set design! The backwater and the backroads! Demon!Dean, go forth and frolic out there.

# Requisite "Myyy but this cage really only exists to demonstrate how attractive you are" Sam shoutout! ("IT'S A BRACKET.")

# Also, it's weirdly difficult to separate Missy from Emma in my mind now.

# My commentary on 1x16: Meg/Sam lapdance/bondage is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

# Though uh, did they just leave the daeva in Chicago? XP THEY SHOULD BE GLAD MEG DIDN'T ACTUALLY DIE, THEN. Imagine how annoyed Ennis and all his friends would have been if there were random daevas prowling around their monster mob Chicago kingdom.

I'm still not entirely sure what a daeva is. Dean said lorelore something Caleb something Zoroastrian lore, and Sam flashbombed them under the impression that they were shadow demons--which apparently worked, even though Meg pointed out that they weren't shadows, they were "in the room--their shadows are just the only thing you can see. They're invisible."

So wouldn't it be equally likely that if the whole thing were some kind of crazy trap, Meg actually didn't have an daeva at all, and she was just dicking around with a hokey altar while concealing her actual use of hellhounds (which she redeploys in 5x10 to great effect)?

Not that it matters, really. But I'd be curious about how many monster species the Winchesters have misidentified but managed to dispatch anyway. It's important! For... For the phylogeny of monsterdom!

# Seriously, though. I think convincing Death not to decimate Chicago at the end of S5 was basically just cover-up karma for all the times the Winchesters have decided, well... fuck Chicago! We have a mytharc to pursue! To the Batmobile!

SWEETBEES > SWEETPEAS

Okay, so all of my Sam kinks are really fucken weird. The most recent one is the non-existent H/C trope, tonic immobility--except for it to work Sam has to be a shark and he has to be upside down. But you know what, if watersports is a kink, SAM AS AN UPSIDE DOWN SHARK IS TOO.

I've finally found my Dean equivalent! Though my preference is for beekeeper!Dean over bees!Dean, I will make an exception for this:

Those are bees covered in powdered sugar. LITERALLY THE SWEETEST BEES YOU KNOW, AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT. Just think of the potential for Deancest! All the powdery!Dean bees would get licked by the non-powdery!Dean bees and it would be adorable. :D Plus, there's canon precedence for this:

Er, anyway. What I mean by this is I went to bee class on Saturday, and we learned about parasites and pathogens that affect hives. Meghan, who runs the Northern Bee Network, is a farmer/epidemiologist, so it was a particularly intense lesson--it reminded me rather pleasantly of my medical microbio exams except with bees. Because when we went out to the hive for the "lab" portion it went something like,

Meghan: HIVE PRESENTS WITH SHOTGUN PATTERN BROOD. POTENTIAL DIAGNOSES? LOOK AT THESE UNCAPPED CELLS. SEE HOW THE LARVAE IN THESE ONES ARE EVEN AND WHITE, AND THIS ONE IS YELLOW AND TWISTED? WHAT DOES THAT SUGGEST?

WHAT ABOUT MITES; LET'S CHECK FOR MITES. IF THERE ARE MITES, WHAT ARE THE AVAILABLE TREATMENT OPTIONS? WHICH ALIGNS BEST WITH YOUR ESTABLISHED HIVE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY? IF WE DON'T FIND ANY MITES, WHAT MIGHT THAT ALSO SUGGEST? LOW BROOD COUNT? GOOD. SO AT THIS STAGE, WOULD WE WANT TO SUPER?

The reason those bees are covered in powdered sugar is because it's part of a (hilarious, but totally legit, I swear) way of approximating mite counts in your hive, and comparing that number against certain established baselines to decide whether your mite count might be detrimental to your hive.

Basically, what you do is take out a frame and give it a shake, so you can collect a 1/2 cup of bees and put it in a mason jar (lid fitted with size 8 hardware cloth), then dump some powdered sugar in with them. Then you shake them up inside the jar (O_o;;!) and wait until the jar warms as a result of the bees' vibrations. This will cause the powdered sugar to stick to their bodies and the mites, subsequently, to slip off. Then you can shake out the powdered sugar and the mites and count them to approximate for the entire hive.

It's so cute, though. So, so cute. :'D

Since I've friended a few people recently and I was not wearing a warning label at the time, a brief explanation: Hi, I'm Kalliel, I really like bees and I really like marine life, and I will stop at nothing to connect these things to SPN by whatever means necessary. I've been campaigning for beekeeper!Dean since 2010, but this idea has only recently gained even the remotest bit of relevance, re: Cain's bees in 9x11. Upside down shark!Sam still has no canon resonance whatsoever, but if S10 goes the way S9 did, aka deeper and deeper into my heart of hearts, OH THERE WILL BE. THERE WILL BE. XP
