[Fanmix] WORST SPN FANMIX EVER, Track 02: "Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day" by Bowling for Soup

Yup, time for more!

Last time: Track 01: "Tiger Took My Family" by Dr. Bombay

Track 02: "Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day" by Bowling for Soup

My father and siblings and I drove down to Disneyland this past summer. My dad assured us that he had prepped the car with thematic music. We took this to mean we'd be listening to the classical tunes of the Disney Renaissance--The Lion King, Mulan, Pocahantas,... Maybe even the later soundtracks from Lilo & Stitch or Cars, since we also owned those.

This was not to be--my mother owns the Renaissance cassettes (she never made the transition from cassette to CD to MP3, and when the world abandoned 35mm film, rather than buy a digital camera, she abandoned photography), and the Lilo and Cars were buried somewhere in my brother's bedroom at her house.

Our Disney music was as follows:

- a Pirates of the Caribbean CD I'd burned for my dad years ago
- the soundtrack to that movie about the Mary Poppins that came out recently
- the soundtrack to the Disney Channel's Phineas & Ferb

Phineas and Ferb is a cartoon about two brothers on summer vacation, who dream up all kinds of wacky, imaginative hi-jinks--it's about youth and creativity and meaningful human relationships, and its claims to greatness in my mind reside in its 1) championship of "non-traditional" family structures (the two brothers are actually step-brothers, and this is their parents' second marriage; the villain is divorced, but shares joint custody over his teenage daughter), and 2) its genial, often snarky metatheatrical humor.

And in spite of the fact that Phineas and Ferb are about 5000000% more well-adjusted than the Winchesters, it's a seven hour drive from my father's house to Disneyland. We had three CDs, less than an hour long each. And we had to drive home, too. You do the math!

Since obviously I can't go seven hours without thinking about SPN, I got to thinking about the lyrics of Phineas and Ferb's inspirational, upbeat theme song. And I decided that if I were a vidder, what the world would really, really need is a vid that celebrated SPN's meta and humor to that theme song. Because there's nothing more horrifying and traumatic than the subversion of something that's supposed to make you feel really good about yourself.

Take Asia's "Heat of the Moment," for instance.

Now, just imagine how amazing a Mystery Spot-themed vid would be to a song with lyrics that go like this:

(This could possibly be the best day ever)
And the forecast says that tomorrow will likely be a million and six times better,
So make every minute count, jump up, jump in and seize the day,
And lets make sure that in every single possible way.
(Seriously, this is gonna be great.)

This could possibly be the best day ever.
(Today is gonna be a great day.)
This could possibly be the best day ever.
Today is gonna be a great day.

Oh, and the brothers also have a pet platypus with a secret-secret agent identity where he goes around surreptitiously fighting crime in a trenchcoat. Sound like anyone else we know? :P

(When I made this graphic, SPN was airing on Fridays.)
