SPN Fic Recs That AREN'T For S9!

ALL THE FIC RECS. I'm in a ~mood, okay. Forgive me! The title of this batch is "Not S9 Fic Recs." Or, alternatively, "highly variegated but equally perceptive explorations of Sam and Dean at entirely unrelated points in their respective lives." Primarily gen, also includes Dean/Castiel and Sam/Amelia. Spans chronologically from pre-series to early S8.

1. The World Was Saved by septembers_coda
Genre: hurt/comfort (Dean), angst, post-5x22 tag!fic
Characters: Dean, OFC
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2,800
Summary: Lisa can’t risk letting Dean stay when he comes to her after Sam went to Hell, so now Dean is alone. Dean has lost his love, his brother, and everything he ever had, and his grief is the one monster he can’t defeat.

I adore what this fic does with the idea of loneliness, touch. There are talking cures and fucking cures but I don't know that I've ever seen straight-up touching and it's done so, so beautifully here. Re: S5/6 my heart rate generally just surges because abandonment, loneliness-these aren't good things for Dean and even more so then.

There's a scene in this fic where Dean is checking himself out to see if he was presentable enough post 5x22 to go into a massage place that I just love--the detail of it, the realism. And the whole rest of this fic is painful in the best of ways--the desolation doesn't go away, and the general situation doesn't really change in the end, but something does. Something very much changes. It kind of reminds me of people who will hug pillows in the absence of their spouse. It changes nothing but it matters anyway.

2. Respect by brightly_lit
Genre: gen, angst, h/c, teen!chesters
Characters: Sam, Dean, John, OMC hunter
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~3,800
Summary: John sends a very unwilling 14-year-old Sam with Phil, one of John's hunter buddies, to help him kill a werewolf. When things don't go as planned, Sam has to rely on himself and what he's been taught to try to pick up the pieces. Sometimes life with Dad and Dean seems pretty great by comparison.

I love the disjuncture between Sam and Dean at the beginning of this, where their age difference is at just that point there it's hit that striking note of dissimilarity, to say nothing of their different relationships with hunting in general. Even as he spends most of this fic apart from them, this fic is about Sam's shitty home and his domineering father and his jerkoff brother, both of whom he loves very much, and both of whose respect he misses. This fic just has a magnificent sense of balance that I really value and enjoy. And Sam's narration here, his perceptivity, is just stellar. Ladies and gentlemen, Sam. Winchester. <3

3. Sold by sistabro
Genre: het, drabble
Pairing: Sam/Amelia
Rating: R
Word Count: 470
Summary: Sam and Amelia break in their new couch.

I love the way certain minute details figure into the sparse background of the fic, this brand new unfamiliar couch, the idea of newness (and recaptured youth)--but also the idea of something concrete, something real, taking shape.

This is probably one of very few porny fics I've read where the characters involved actually seem like they're having fun. And I don't mean like, it's not torture porn, or it's not non con. But like... it's not just about some carnal, insatiable eroticism they're desperately fulfilling with their partner. They're actually having fun!! And that's very special indeed.

4. The Drop
Genre: schmoop, kink, caretaker!Sam
Pairing: Dean/Castiel, Sam-facilitated Dean/Castiel (which is so awesome it bears a separate pairing mention), past Sam/Jess
Rating: PG-13 for reference to sexual practices
Word Count: ~1200
Original Prompt: While Castiel and Dean have an awareness of BDSM practices, actually engaging in them is a new thing for them, and they haven't come across anything discussing the importance of aftercare and the possibility of subdrop. Thus, after a spanking session or similar, Castiel ensures that Dean is physically okay but leaves shortly afterwards (maybe for something completely innocuous like making them some tea or taking a shower, or he has to leave on heavenly business), leaving Dean alone in bed/on the couch/wherever and utterly overwhelmed- and not in a good way any more. Sam stumbles across him and figures out what's going on. As a more experienced dom than Cas, he gets Dean a drink and a blanket before calling Castiel back and showing him how to take care of Dean properly.

That moment when you find kinks you didn't know you had? That'd be this fic. Dean/subdrop is now my OTP, that is all, the end. And I love Sam in this so much. He's so chillaxed and matter-of-fact about everything but still stern. This is VERY much a fic you read with your heart, because the tenderness, I can't even handle it. <3

5. Strays Like Us by coragyps
Genre: schmoop, caretaker!Sam
Characters: Sam, Dean
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~1500
Original Prompt: Dean is sick and feverish with a cold and Sam has a heart for nurse play. He takes Dean's temperature, feels his pulse, maybe even uses medical instruments like a stethoscope. Normally Dean wouldn't let him and make a fuss about it, but he's rather to sick for a bitch fit or Sam is able to convince him of the necessity of the exams. Dean's all pliant and easily obeying to Sam's gentle commands to 'open his mouth' or 'tilt his head', even if he complains about things being 'cold' or unpleasant. Sam really, really (!) likes Dean being so submissive and pets and comforts him all the time while he exams him.

I don't really have god things to say here, because my reactions to these fics are so affective--so really I'm reccing on the hopes that the prompts and the promise of heart-squeezing feels will reel you in. :P To further titillate, an excerpt:

"S'okay, Dean," he says. His fingers slide into Dean's hair, combing it back, slow enough that Dean doesn't seem to register the petting. He gets like this sometimes, when he's sick, letting some things slide under the radar.

Sam loves it.

You and me both, Sam, you and me both. <3___<3

6. For Destruction, Ice by coragyps
Genre: schmoop, caretaker!Sam
Characters: Sam, Dean
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~1500
Summary: Dean sleepwalks. And then Dean sleepwalks outside. Into the cold.

Sam couldn’t remember Dean ever doing anything more than muttering incomprehensibly in his sleep, so the stories were just funny, harmless. Unrelated to his brother as he knew him.

But that night[...]

There's sleepwalking, and manhandling, and hypothermia, and bed-sharing and BROMENTS OF BOTH TRAGIC AND ADORABLE NATURES. Need I say more?? Sam's narration in this is entire galaxies of poignant, and the dialogue in the last part of this is so light and so at odds with Sam's thoughts (and yet not at odds with those thoughts at all--classic Winchester paradox) that it makes it a little hard to breathe. Guh. <33
