Right before heading to campus to hold office hours I got a call from a program director I'm working with. She was calling to let me know that yesterday, my favorite administrative staff member passed away unexpectedly. The University doesn't have any additional information at this time.
I last saw her on Friday. We (literally) ran into each other in the hall. As it always is with unexpected deaths, she was fine then. Everything was normal. I sent her an email on Saturday inquiring about office supplies. Looking back, I accidentally thanked her twice in one email. She deserves so very many more.
She was one of those people who had this boundless energy, and was perky and funny even when you knew she was super stressed out and busy. She was the kind of person you'd always make sure to tell about leftover food from your events, and the kind who wasn't afraid to take it. (She'd always tell you when there was food from other people's events, too.) She was always ready to help, and never made you feel like your asking for tech assistance or keys or a thousand other thing things that were her job but weren't really her job was an imposition. She was casually open about how she was feeling or what she was excited about in a way that made you feel like she genuinely liked you, and seemed happy to pop in for a quick chat whenever she was also coming somewhere for business. She could make a velour jacket look business casual, and her white blonde high ponytail was just as bouncy as she was. I love you, Tammy. ♥
