I've written a lot of SPN fic that is extremely unambitious, but I tend to take Summergen as my chance to try harder (or do something weirder), and I think that's reflected in this collection, for sure. It feels at once super on brand (majority Sam POV with a focus on desperately sad probably hurt Sam+Dean, plus some pieces featuring a motley assortment of minor characters) and surprising--the number of AUs, the amount of time I've spent doing Weird Heaven Things. I also clearly adore Seasons 9 and 10, which is true.
The POV tally came out to:
Sam = 8
outsider/minor = 6
Dean = 3
Castiel = 1
And uhhhh I gotta say, most of these I actually do remember, at least in terms of conceit if not in the entirety of their contents. But I had COMPLETELY forgotten about at least two of these and even having skimmed them I am not entirely sure I actually remember them. XP "Leave This Place" (WHICH IS 13K LONG)? Whomst???????? "Deathless"? I, uh, remember titling that one...
I think my least favorite of these are "Goat Dance" and "Don't Forget Winona." "Goat Dance" because it's about a trope I don't care for and set in an episode I also don't really care about--but both of those are reasons I chose that prompt to work with. And "Don't Forget Winona" because in my mind (I haven't re-read it) it is boring. XPP But I'll give myself a pass on that because it was also one of the first SPN fics I'd ever written.
Favorite is harder--I'd probably have to re-read them to decide that. I suspect a lot of them have the same heart in diferent skin, which is maybe uncreative/cheating but also maybe the truest expression of who I am as a writer and what I love about SPN. ♥
Below the cut:
- "that thing in Flagstaf" Bobby mentioned, according to Sam
- Poison, sewers, MotW from the POV of a child
- Gwen Campbell and hunting families (this one had monster jerky in it LOL)
- horror Mystery Spot AU
- sad H/C Mystery Spot AU
- a long casefic I don’t remember writing + Kat and Gavin from 1x10 (but set in S8?!)
- French Mistake AU that involved apocalypse and Kollywood??? I think I killed Jensen Ackles and felt real bad about it
- Dean, monstrous. Heaven, probably worse.
- Sam, monstrous. Hell, less impressive.
- de-aged Dean on a bus
- the one where Charlie, Rowena, and Tamara team up
- the one with a lot of Heaven lore and I think the entire thing takes place in a cave
- this one’s about Rowena and I remember writing Montana landscapes…
- alchemy!zombie!Sam and Jacob Pond seeking demon!Dean
- post-Gadreel casefic with hellhounds
- the AU where Sam and Dean are angels at the dawn of the universe
- CYOA of 1x11 where I spent a lot of time describing fucked up cars
Don’t Forget Winona -- Pre-series, S3/5, POV Sam, Sam, Dean, Bobby, Bela
Sam leaves on Dean's watch and jumps a Greyhound to Flagstaff, AZ. It's not a clean break.
One (Two) -- S2, POV outsider, Dean, Sam
A kidnapped girl in the sewers of Koreatown, a poisonous butterfly, and the necessity of nonverbal communication. S2.
Brass Ceiling -- S6, POV outsider, Gwen, other Campbells
Hunting is the difference between skipping town because the rent's overdue and skipping town because there's a werewolf two states over. It's the difference between being a murderer and being a big damn hero. Gwen and hers have got it coming, and there is no getting out--only strapping in.
Gwen Campbell, and what it means to be a woman on the fringe.
Here There Be Tygers -- S3, POV Sam, Sam, Dean
The problem with Dean's life is, it's supposed to end this year. And the problem with Dean's brother, well. Sam's still working on that one.
Here There By Tygers (sad poetry remix) -- S3, POV Sam, Sam, Dean
It's not Hell, Hell-that-knows-no-end Hell, but it's a hell without a beginning and maybe that's just as bad. Sam is, after all, the Boy King, Prince of Hell, Ruler of the Demon Hordes, and whatever else. Maybe his majesty is just annexing new territories.
Leave This Place -- S8, POV Sam/various, Dean, Sam, Kat/Gavin
Either you dismiss simplicity or you hide your timebombs in it, but nothing's ever really simple. Sam and Dean are forced to come to terms with the scorched earth they're not actually leaving behind. And after an unceremonious reunion with the Winchesters, Kat contends with the grisly future. Set post-S8.
Headliners -- S6, POV various, Jo, Dean, Sam
"The French Mistake" goes awry, the Titanic doesn't sink, and Eve never dies. Jo and what's left of her family pick up the pieces:
RITUALISTIC PRACTICES AT HOME TURNED DEAN WINCHESTER TO SATAN AT AN EARLY AGE, Rev. Don Dawson confirms. Proposes funds be allocated from the Department of Defense for county-wide religious cleansing. -- NEWS@11: String of racial hate crimes last August points to Dean Winchester. -- Dean Winchester's Home Invasion: The Girlfriend's Not Talking, But the Neighbor Saw it All -- EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW--
The Monster -- S9, POV Dean, Dean, Sam, Heaven, Castiel
Dean believes in justice, even when he's on its sharp end. Sam believes in soulmates. Post-S9.
13 short sad stories Sam (boyking) later recommended -- S9, POV multiple, Sam, angels and demons
Sam summons Crowley right after the s9 finale and shows what a pissed off demon-hunting, Lucifer-vessel, Men of Letters, drunk little brother is REALLY capable of when it comes to revenge.
Goat Dance -- S10, POV Dean, Dean, OC, Sam
Sam, Dean, Taylor Swift, goats. It’s just that kind of day.
Four Witches -- S10, POV Charlie/multiple, Charlie, Rowena, Tamara
After surviving her untimely demise, Charlie finds herself adrift in Shreveport, Louisiana. But with news of the Styne Massacre already dominating all the local broadcasts and the Darkness gone to seed, Charlie realizes she’s going to have to choose her heroes and her stories wisely.
Magic doesn’t make the witch, says Rowena. That’s violence that does. And we are witches three. Welcome to the Scottish play, my dear.
Watchful -- S11/12, POV Castiel, Castiel, Sam, Dean, Mary, Toni, angels
The first words, when God and the Darkness go: Mary Winchester is freed. And let's just say there's a reason Ash could never track her down before--six hundred sixty-six of them, actually. But then, this is only what Castiel thinks. Perhaps his is not a story to tell.
Deathless -- S10/11, Sam, Dean, Rowena
The Book of the Damned called for Rowena's heart, so she killed her Polish boy. But Rowena is a witch, not a lover--and she may have given more than she meant. Now it's Sam's turn to give.
2081 -- S9/10, POV Sam, Sam, Dean, Jacob Pond, Meg, Walt+Roy, Castiel, Tracy Bell
Sam Winchester, a roadtrip, and an old man who is not his brother. He has sharper teeth, for one. If only just. Takes place after an alternate 9x23/10x03, where demon!Dean doesn't join Crowley, but is never cured of being, well, demon!Dean.
Mongrels -- S9, POV Dean, Dean, Sam, Castiel
Dean doesn’t know he’s dying until Sam wakes him up to tell him so.
The Master’s House -- Pre-series AU, POV Sam, Sam+Dean, Castiel, God, some angels
Today is the first-ever Tuesday. Sam's been told there will be more. (The AU where Sam and Dean are angels at the dawn of the universe.)
Play It Again -- S1, POV Sam, Sam+Dean
This is not an adventure, but you can make choices. Choose Your Own Adventure riff on mid-S1.
